Major Google Algorithm Update
A surprising number of major changes took place in the last quarter of 2019. On October 25, Google announced what many believe to be the biggest algorithm update in five years. Based on many millions of searches, the search engine made changes to the core algorithm to be able to show better results for more complex searches. The thousands of algorithm changes are normally not specifically announced by Google. However, different rules apply to major changes such as the BERT update, so that companies can prepare for them.

Google released the following statement regarding the BERT update:

“These improvements are oriented around improving language understanding, particularly for more natural language/conversational queries, as BERT is able to help Search better understand the nuance and context of words in Searches and better match those queries with helpful results.

Particularly for longer, more conversational queries, or searches where prepositions like 'for' and 'to' matter a lot to the meaning, Search will be able to understand the context of the words in your query. You can search in a way that feels natural for you.”


In October, Google made Responsive Search Ads available to all advertisers. The feature allows advertisers to automatically test different combinations in their ads against each other. Headlines and descriptions are automatically swapped to find the best combination between the two. Many PPC specialists see Responsive Search Ads as an important feature, but one that is only just beginning to show its potential impact.
