However, about six months after Jack's project idea was launched

” Jack further described his idea as a messaging service that connects everyone on their phones via text message. Everyone in Jack’s brainstorming team liked the idea and bought it. Later, each brainstorming group presented their ideas and Jack’s idea was one of the few selected for prototyping. Demos were made of the selected ideas and Jack and two other people were assigned to build version 0.1. The remaining members of the company went back to maintaining Odeo.com, in case Jack’s new idea failed. Twitter was founded on March 21, 2006 by Jack Dorsey and co-founders Evan Williams and Biz Stone, when the first version of Jack's idea was born.

At 12:50 PST UTC-08:00 the same day, Jack made the very first tweet, "just setting up facebook phone number list my twttr". This version of Twitter was completely web-based. The original project name for Jack's idea was " twttr ", coined by Noah Glass, an American technology entrepreneur who is part of the Twitter success story. The project's codename, " twttr ", was inspired by the fact that American SMS shortcodes are five characters long and Flickr , the popular American image and video hosting service. Another reason for using the codename twttr was that someone else had registered the domain twitter.

They were finally able to purchase the domain twitter.com and the service was renamed Twitter. Initially, Twitter had only about 50 users because the user base was limited to Odeo members and their immediate families. This was to prevent the idea from leaking to competitors while development was underway. Some time later, Twttr Beta was launched and the user base was expanded somewhat. On July 15, 2006, the full version of Twitter was released to the public. In October, Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and several other Odeo members formed a new company called Obvious Corporation.
