Instagram and Facebook reached 1 billion users in 7.7 and 8.7 years, respectively, and have been growing ever since. However, there are some differences - including user numbers and user demographics.
Number of users
Both Facebook and Instagram have significant business owner data numbers of users, but Facebook's audience is significantly larger. Facebook has 2.9 billion monthly users, while Instagram has 2 billion monthly users.
It is important to note that Facebook's user growth has leveled off over the past five years, while Instagram continues to grow.
Age and gender of users
For both Facebook and Instagram, the minimum age to create a profile is 13. This is important for marketers because it means there are children on both platforms.
Yet, teenagers under 18 only make up about 7% of Instagram users. More than 60% of Instagram users are between the ages of 18-34, with a slight majority of women in this age range.
This means that if you're targeting potential customers in their 20s and 30s - especially women in this age range - Instagram is a great place to reach your audience.
Facebook, on the other hand, is older and has a male majority. Almost 50% of Facebook users are between the ages of 25 and 44. Almost 30% of all Facebook users are men between the ages of 25 and 44.
Both social networks have huge audiences around the world
