Heatmaps are a great way to see how people are using and interacting with your site (especially if you want to understand why so many people are bouncing from your page).
There are a million heatmap tools out there, but my favorites are CrazyEgg and Hotjar .
Heatmap tools
Regardless of which heatmap tool you choose, they all work pretty much the same way: you add a small snippet of javascript to your site for the tool to start tracking how people read, click, and scroll your page.
CrazyEgg heatmap
For example, you can see that on this db center.uk page of our site MANY people click on the indicated link, which is located at the top of the page.
CrazyEgg – Heavily-clicked link
Getting this type of engagement at the top of the page is a great way to reduce your bounce rate.
Conversely, very few people interact with our sidebar.
CrazyEgg – Low-click sidebar
For this reason, I might decide to remove it altogether: if no one clicks on it, my sidebar is just a distraction.
So, as you can see, heatmap data is SUPER useful.
You probably already know that internal links are great for SEO.
But you may not know that they can also improve your bounce rate.
The reason?
Internal links send people to other pages on your site.
In other words, page views naturally increase.
Use heatmap data to improve your top landing pages
