New case of phishing: With the hacking of a database of one of Banco Santander's suppliers, large companies in Spain are, more than ever, on alert for possible cybercrimes: according to the computer security company Kaspersky, 74% of corporations have suffered digital breaches in the last two years.
The Administration is not immune to this fact either, since on January 15, the town hall of Calvià, in Mallorca, suffered a ransomware attack, which is basically a malicious code that allows the cybercriminal to take control of the system and hijack it in various ways, such as blocking the screen or encrypting the information, thus preventing the correct use of digital equipment.
In addition to attacks, offenders also try to local marketing email list defraud entities and users, either by using social engineering or identity theft. The latest case of this type occurred at Juan Roig's supermarket company, Mercadona.
Identity theft fraud
The Valencian chain has warned of a new attempt at "phishing", a method used by cybercriminals to impersonate people or companies in order to obtain sensitive information and data from users.
On this occasion, the corporation has responded to an Internet user through its official profile on the social network X. The affected person, on this platform, expressed his displeasure since he had received a call from Mercadona to participate in a contest, stating that he had given his data by telephone to participate in this event.
Minutes later, the Valencian company responded to the victim, stating that the Mercadona brand and image were being used without authorization, since they do not organize "any type of promotion, raffle, nor do we give away shopping vouchers."
In another reply, Juan Roig's company assured the user, this time directly, that they should not provide their "bank and/or bank card details, or any other personal data", as well as not to make "any payment" with credit cards to that number. They also guaranteed that they were working "to avoid this type of fraud".
Other cases
Major telephony companies such as Jazztel, Orange and Symio also suffered digital attacks in 2024. On this occasion, a hacker known as @Ms_Snow_OwO accessed the French company's IP manager in Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia and modified parameters that prevented users from browsing the Web normally for a few hours.
Likewise, the Madrid Regional Transport Consortium (CRTM) announced last February that in the early hours of November 22 it suffered a cyber attack that compromised the data of transport card holders in this community.
