Apple continues its quest for a social network

Post by asimd17 »

Apple has not had much success so far in its push for social networking. In early June, the company's CEO, Tim Cook, announced the closure of Ping, the iTunes-based social network, due to the poor reception of the service by users. He said that the company did not really need such a product, but now he is looking with interest at The Fancy, a budding social network .

"Apple doesn't have to be a social network, but we do have to be social," Cook acknowledged weeks before Ping's closure in a statement at All Things Digital's D10 conference. "Consumers have tried Ping and have said it's not necessary, so I think it will go away one day, although it does have value for ig data some people," added the Apple CEO.

Just a few months after the news that Ping would not be present in iOS 6, the first news has arrived indicating that Apple is interested in buying the social network The Fancy, a site that combines social media with e-commerce backed by the former creators of Facebook and Twitter.

The Fancy is known for being Pinterest's main rival in the US, and although the company has only been operating since last April, its network already generates sales of 10 thousand dollars a day and has 1 million users who upload an average of 500 thousand images per day.

As recently reported by The Business Insider, Apple may be interested in securing a role in the growth of this new social network. Although Apple's CEO denied a few months ago that his company depended on any social network, it seems that this time those from Cupertino plan to invest again in a site with a strong social component.

Apple could bet on the 400 million users who download content through iTunes as potential customers for The Fancy and thus secure its position in the e-commerce market .

No further details are known about Apple's possible acquisition of The Fancy at this time, and neither party has been willing to confirm this. However, the CEOs of both companies have recently met and Cook, who does not participate in any other social media, has started using The Fancy.
