1 - Definition of Big Data: three Vs: variety, volume, velocity
Big Data is a sometimes still obscure concept that has been flooding our screens for the past two years. What is hidden behind this English expression straight out of a science fiction film, characterized by its 3Vs (Volume, Velocity, Variety)?

Comments left on social networks? Facebook or Twitter, videos published on YouTube or Dailymotion, music on iTunes or Deezer, bank payments, emails, GPS signals, SIM cards of electronic devices...: more whatsapp number list than 2.5 trillion bytes of data transit on the web every day, in particular thanks to the democratization of digital since ADSL and the appearance of smartphones and tablets (source: Le Nouvel Observateur).

This exponential data set represented 1.2 zettabytes (10 in 2010, then 2.9 zettabytes in 2012 and would reach 40 zettabytes in 2020 according to American specialists (Source: BPM and Gartner) who have - quite logically - called the phenomenon Big Data.

Big Data is characterized by the 3V problem:

Velocity: The speed at which data is processed simultaneously
Variety: the varied origin of data sources that arrive unstructured (different formats, codes, languages, etc.)
Volume: the total weight of the data collected
These 3Vs raise the question of data management and exploitation. How can we manage increasingly numerous and diverse data, and do it more and more quickly? We must indeed think about how to collect them, store them and then analyze them in order to exploit them wisely.
