25 years since the creation of the “.br” Domain

On April 18th, the “.br” domain will complete 25 years since its creation, and CGI.br, the Internet Steering Committee in Brazil, declared that more than 3.4 million domains have already been registered by Registro.br.

The use of “.br” began in the academic community to identify machines already on the network. It was only after ECO-92, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, that other parts of civil society were able to access the network due to the increased dissemination of the “.br” domain.

In 1996, the commercial phase of the Internet began, reaching a total of 851 registered “.br” domains, and completed the year with 7,507 registrations. Domain registrations using accented characters such as à, á, â, ã, é, ê, í, ó, ô, õ, ú, ü and ç were permitted from 2005 onwards.

In the list of country code domains (called ccTLDs or country-code Top Level Domains ), Brazil is in eighth place in the world ranking.

And according to Demi Getschko, CEO of the Brazilian Domain Information and Coordination Center (NIC.br), Registro.br has a team of highly qualified professionals who are responsible for analyzing and developing new tools to improve the Brazilian domain name registration system, which offers registration categories for individuals, legal entities, professionals and universities.
