Example #1: Internet Service Provider
A person is posing as an employee of your internet service provider. They could easily trick you into telling you that they have come for a maintenance check. First of all, ordinary people are not experts in network maintenance, but rather have a vague notion that it is necessary to keep Netflix running. So, you will “bite” and let them in and brazil whatsapp number data 5 million do their “job.” What you can do in this scenario is ask questions and say that no one informed you that such a visit would be happening. Additionally, you can take this a step further and ask them what internet plan they subscribe to or more advanced questions that only a real employee would know the answer to. Check your sources and call your internet service provider directly.
Example #2: Gift Card Eligibility
You receive an email with the subject line: “GOOD NEWS!!” You open it, and you see that you are eligible for a free gift card. Great, right? And who doesn’t love free stuff, especially gift cards? You will see a link inside, where you must enter your information in order to have the gift card sent to you. Alternatively, the hacker can first check the victim’s availability, to determine if this victim is useful to them and to establish affinity. They need first/last name, address, etc. However, ask yourself this: if someone knows that you are eligible for a gift card… how come they don’t already know your information? Why are you eligible? Where did this “contest” come from? Did you fill out a survey or something? You see, this is the part where you should realize that this is most likely a scam. Pretexting is not limited to just these examples, scammers will always come up with a new pretexting technique. Your best response would be to arm yourself with knowledge and be aware that such scams will always exist, and that they take multiple forms.
